In Loving Memory Of James LeRoy “Jim” Mentzer Jim was a man of integrity, courage and enjoyed his life with his family and friends. Yes, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him may not die but may have eternal life. John 3:15 JAMES LeROY “JIM” MENTZER, age 79, of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. James was born September 23, 1930 in Missouri Valley, Iowa to James B. and Gertrude M. (Ort) Mentzer. Jim graduated from the Missouri Valley High School in 1948, while in school he participated in track, baseball and basketball. In 1948 Jim played 2nd base and outfielder for the Pasadena Post Office semi-pro baseball team. He attended UNI for two years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served three years with the 196th Regimental Combat Team. Jim then finished his education and received his degree in Accounting and was employed with the U. S. Treasury and Justice Departments. Jim was married to Jeanne C. Sorgie, June 18, 1955 in Plainfield, New Jersey. Jim was a member of the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge. His hobbies included golf, softball and bowling. He was a charter member of the Missouri Valley Bowling Hall of Fame. He enjoyed the Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco Giants and attended the College World Series for over forty-five years. Jim is now with our Lord, happy and freed of the suffering he endured. He will be deeply missed. Jim’s request was to be cremated and have a Memorial Service. Survivors include his wife: Jeanne C. of Missouri Valley, Iowa; daughters: Pamela Batchelder and husband Dr. Stuart of Dahlonega, Georgia; Kathleen Dunlay and husband Dr. Robert of Omaha, Nebraska; son: William Mentzer of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; sisters: Dorothy John and husband Harold of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Esther Nichols and husband Virgil of San Marino, California; brother: Joseph Mentzer and wife Marilyn of Missouri Valley, Iowa; grandchildren: Ryan Dunlay and wife Erin, Andrew Dunlay, Mary Dunlay, Tony Richardson, Megan Combee, Ashley Hermman and husband Kent, Alysha Mentzer, Will Mentzer, John Batchelder, Maria Batchelder; great-grandchildren: Madeline and Max Dunlay; numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Evelyn Hart and Gertrude Adkins and brothers Robert Mentzer and Charles Mentzer.
