Mildred was the second of three children born to Lawrence Edward and Satt Erlene (Jones) Mead, respectively from Little Sioux and Orson, Iowa. Mildred spent her childhood in the Missouri Valley and Logan communities, graduating from Missouri Valley High School in 1950. She grew up delivering papers and working at the local theater, recounting The Sweet Shop, cheerleading and beating the boys in marbles among her favorite memories. On July 21, 1951, Mildred married Robert (Bob) James Deitering of Modale in Aurora, Colorado where Bob was serving in the Air Force. She worked as secretary for a Denver law firm until Bob was deployed to Europe. Returning to Missouri Valley, Mildred worked for the McGrority Law firm for 8 years until her only child, Debra, was born in 1961. After a brief hiatus, she returned to the workplace, this time as secretary for A.V. Sorensen of Omaha. Mildred worked for Sorensen for over 26 years, serving as his personal secretary when Sorensen served as mayor of Omaha from May of 1965 to May of 1969. Mildred retired in Missouri Valley in 1988. Throughout her life, she kept books for Bob’s business, Deitering Electric. Mildred most enjoyed her cats, reading the newspaper and sewing, making almost all her daughter’s childhood clothes. Her favorites included Disneyland, Ronald Reagan, chili, her Grandma Molly and clothes shopping. She lived with acute arthritis the last 25 years of her life. Mildred is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert; her sister Mary Lou (Mead) Morrow; daughter Debra and son-in-law Cory of Asheville, NC; 2 grandchildren, Alexander and Catherine Ann Jing (Annie); and a host of nieces and nephews.
