Thomas W. Stewart

Thomas Wesley Stewart, age 87, passed away on September 30, 2015 at his home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Tom was born on May 19, 1928 to Charles Henry and Grace Garnet (Fouts) Stewart. Tom attended school in Modale, Iowa but put his education on hold when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 29, 1946 at the age of 18. He later received an honorable discharge due to health reasons from the United States Marine Corps. In 1950, he was drafted into the United States Army, in which he proudly and honorably served for twenty years. In the Army, Tom served as a combat engineer and served in the Korean War as well as two tours in the Vietnam War. At the time of his retirement on January 10, 1970, Tom had achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class and had received numerous military awards, including two bronze stars. Tom was married to Violet Reed on December 17, 1955 in Missouri Valley, Iowa and graduated from Modale High School in 1956. After their marriage, the couple lived in Germany for six years. During his military career, Tom was stationed in multiple locations, including Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After retiring from the Army in 1970, the couple moved to Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska where they resided for 32 years. Tom and Violet celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary shortly before Violet passed away on January 28, 2003 and Tom moved back to Missouri Valley, Iowa in June 2003 to be closer to family. On June 6, 2011, Tom married Sharon Webber and they enjoyed four wonderful years together. Tom was a member of the Masonic Lodges in Modale, Iowa, Missouri Valley, Iowa, Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, and Fremont Nebraska; the American Legion Post #158 in Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska; the Shriners International; and the Order of the Eastern Star. He also served for a brief period of time in the early 1970’s as the Scout Master at Camp Eagle and Camp Cedars. Survivors include his spouse, Sharon Stewart; two sons, Charles (and wife Tracey) Stewart and Ronald (and wife Darla) Stewart; a daughter, Diane (and husband Matthew) Ferro, two step-sons, Milton (and wife Mayra) Webber and Matthew (and wife Olga) Webber; a step-daughter, Mona (and husband Matthew) Rau; a brother Donald (and wife Carol) Stewart; nine grandchildren, twelve step-grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, wife Violet, brothers Charles Stewart and Leo Stewart, sisters Mary Ann Stewart and Rose (Stewart) Donnelson, and niece Marlene (Donnelson) Seamann. Visitation with the family will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Hennessey – Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 5, 2015 at the Missouri Valley Christian Church. Graveside services with full military honors will follow the funeral at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to either the Shrine Road Runners or the Boy Scouts of America.
