Victor E. McCurley

Victor E. McCurley, age 100, was born October 7, 1912, the son of James B. and Mary B. (Lovell) McCurley in Logan, Iowa. As a child Victor’s family moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa. After graduation from Missouri Valley High School in 1932 Victor left Iowa to pursue employment in River Rough, Michigan. In River Rough Victor gained employment as a construction worker in a ship yard. December 31, 1941. Victor was united in marriage to Johanna C. Suedbeck of Sioux City, Iowa in Monroe, Michigan. With the advent of WWII Victor enlisted in the United States Navy. On Labor Day 1942, he was inducted into the 29th Naval Construction Battalion. After serving 38 months of service during WWII Victor also served an additional 18 months during the Korean War. Upon completion of his military service Victor and Johanna returned to the mid-west and lived in Sioux City, Iowa. While in Sioux City Victor was employed as a carpenter for Cudahy Meat Packing Co. until the company’s closing. Victor and Johanna then relocated to New York, New York for a short time but eventually returned to the mid-west and re-established their family in Harrison County, Iowa. Throughout his life Victor was employed as a Carpenter on many significant construction accomplishments including the Sears Tower in Chicago, Ill. Victor was preceded in death by his parents James and Mary McCurley. A son Victor McCurley Jr.,and his siblings. Victor is survived by his wife Johanna, children: Lawrence McCurley, Lincoln, Nebraska, Victoria and husband Douglas Johnson of Dakota City, Nebraska , Hal and wife Peggy of Richmond,Texas TX and Mary and husband Paul Haverkamp of Algona, Iowa. He has 6 grandchildren.
