Darrell G Cooper

Darrell Glenn Cooper was born April 11, 1926 near Obert, Nebraska. He was the oldest son of Glenn A. Cooper and Gladys S. (Blatchford) Cooper. Darrell attended Obert Public School from kindergarten through the 11th grade when the school closed. He graduated from Maskell, NE Public School in May of 1944. In the fall of that year, he enrolled at Wayne State College, Wayne, NE. The following spring, he registered for the military draft upon reaching his 18th birthday and was inducted into the United States Army on March 15, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. Basic training was spent at Camp Maxey in Paris, TX before being deployed to the South Pacific War Theater during World War II. Upon completing this assignment, his unit was transferred to the occupation of South Korea during the Korean War, where he spent the duration of his military service. Darrell attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United States Army and was awarded 3 military service medals. On April 6, 1947, Darrell married Joan Joyce Taylor in Ponca, NE. To this union were born a son, Rick, and a daughter, Shari. Darrell worked at Great Plains Lumber and Supply Company in Ponca, NE before being promoted to manager of the yard at Missouri Valley, IA in 1955. Subsequent promotions to District Manager and then Regional Manager over a 5-state area kept Darrell with Great Plains Lumber and Supply Company for 35 years. He retired in 1982. On June 19, 1992, he married Judith Davey in Ponca, NE and added 4 step-sons and a step-daughter to his family. After living in Ponca for a number of years, Darrell and Judy moved to Dakota Dunes, SD. Darrell was preceded in death by his wife (Joan), parents, grandparents, and daughter-in-law. Survivors include: wife, Judy, of Dakota Dunes, SD; son, Rick, of Omaha, NE; daughter, Shari, (Mark) Warner of Missouri Valley, IA; brother, Lowell (Rita) Cooper of Sioux City, IA five grandchildren: Staci (Josh) Nelson, Kellie (Correy) Webb, Shane (Kathleen) Warner, Scott (Kelsey) Cooper, and Ty Warner; six great-grandchildren: Rebekah, Owen, and Ashley Nelson, Landon and Lauren Webb, and Jackson Warner; step-children: John (Tamie) Davey of South Sioux City, NE; Larry (Donna) Davey of Newcastle, NE; Fran (Dave) Hassler of Ponca, NE; Rick (Tammy) Davey of Martinsburg, NE, Rob Davey and Dave Lane of Ponca, NE. Step-grandchildren: Chris Beach, Joe Davey, Kelly Davey, Jennifer Davey, Alison Davey, Sam Davey, and Dan Davey; step great-grandchildren: Emma, Kaitlyn, Sarah, and Brennan Beach.
