John Lewis Smith, age 89 of Forsyth, Missouri passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at his daughters home in Missouri Valley. John was born October 15, 1923 in Burlington, Iowa to Rudolph and Ruth (Rasche) Smith. John graduated from High School in Burlington, Iowa and later served in the Army during WWII. He married Bertha Fielding in England during the War. John owned and operated several Ben Franklin Stores, including Missouri Valley, Harlan and Ida Grove. He then moved to Forsyth, Missouri where he owned and operated Johns Shoe Store. Bertha passed away April 23, 2012. Survivors include his daughter: Susan Maiwald of Missouri Valley, Iowa; sisters: Florence Burwell of Boise, Idaho; Francis Zablodil of Tusten, California. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bertha, son Lawrence, daughters, Barbara and Loraine, sister Marilu Zillman. It was Johns wishes to be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Forsyth, Missouri.
