Lorna Mae Bierwirth

Lorna Mae (Maisie) Groth Bierwirth was born to Anna Katrina (Fritz) and Eitel Emil Groth in Denison, Iowa on June 13, 1928. She grew up in Denison with her younger 3 brothers, Elden, Don and Jackie. After graduating from Denison high school, Maisie attended x-ray tech school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska taking the bus home on weekends to see her fiancée, John (Jack) Bierwirth. John and Lorna were married on July 14, 1949 and moved to a farm near Denison which was the first of many family businesses. John was called to duty in Germany in 1955 and soon Maisie crossed the Atlantic on an ocean liner to spend the next two years living in Germany with her beloved husband. In 1963, they sold the farm and purchased Limmers Resort on Rush Lake and moved to Minnesota with their children Pam, Matt, and Sandy – John was born soon after. They operated the resort for 9 wonderful seasons. The family then moved to California Junction, Iowa in 1972 after selling the resort. Maisie was a full-time mom with several other full-time jobs thrown in. Jack and Maisie purchased and ran Jack’s Conoco in Missouri Valley, Iowa from 1972-1982 . After selling the business, she worked at Hawkeye Insurance Company in Omaha, retiring in 1994. Upon retiring, she was able to be the full-time caregiver for grandchildren Taylor and Paige Herman until they went to school. Jack and Maisie were able to pursue their dream of spending the summers in Minnesota, where they lived on the lake they loved so much and made dear friends they both treasured. They also spent the winters in Texas for 5 years. In the last years of her life, Maisie lived at Longview Care Center, and there adopted another family, and made many dear friends. Her husband, John; children Pam Cates and husband Mitch; Matt Bierwirth and Jan Fehsenfeld; Sandy Herman; and John Bierwirth and wife Betty Jean; grandchildren: Alyssa Cates, Daisha Roberts, Aubrey and Ashley Bierwirth, Taylor and Paige Herman, Nadiah, Ryan, Yasmeen and Noah Bierwirth, great-grandson, Max Roberts, will miss her greatly. Maisie enjoyed fishing, playing cards, was an avid reader and animal lover. Most of all she loved her family and her many friends. She enjoyed talking to people and was a great listener as well as a great counselor. We love her and will miss her dearly until we meet again. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Harrison County Humane Society. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Christian Church following the service.
