Margaret Anne Vittitoe (Brandriff) of Modale, Iowa passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at the age of 86. Margaret was born May 11th, 1931 to Morton and Dorothy (Eliff) Brandriff.
Surviving Margaret is her brother Jim Brandriff and wife Joyce of Oskaloosa; her daughters Carol Hardenbrook and husband Jim of SD; Sharon Johnson and husband Michael of Missouri Valley; son-in-law Pat Berney of Omaha; grandchildren David Hardenbrook and wife Christine of WI; Jennifer (Johnson) Weaver and husband Tom of Omaha; Bobby Hardenbrook and wife Stacey of CA; Cindy (Johnson) Bertelsen and husband Doug of Gretna; Tony Berney of Omaha; Ricky Berney of Omaha; Jerry Berney and wife Alli of Bellevue; seven great grandchildren Brandon Bertelsen, Lauren Bertelsen, Hannah Hardenbrook, Micah Hardenbrook, Erik Berney, Breanna Hardenbrook, and Aliyah Berney; and nephews Scott Brandriff and Bill Blakely and niece Barb Blakely.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, younger sister Emma, half-sisters Mid and Francis, half-brother Jack, and daughter Annette Berney.
Margaret was born on the family farm in Modale, IA and would continue to live and work in the area for the rest of her life. She graduated from Modale Consolidated School in 1949 and wed Frank Vittitoe on March 26th, 1950. To this union were born three daughters and subsequent grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret served the children and the community she loved for 28 years as a cook in the Modale school and 20 years as the librarian of the Modale Public Library. She was a lifelong member of the Modale United Methodist Church and sang in the choir and was part of the United Methodist Women. Reading, playing cards with friends and family, and gardening filled her with joy and she particularly enjoyed the outdoors, animals, and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys. Except for a few brief months in 2011 when she left Modale due to the threat of flooding, Margaret lived, laughed, and loved among a community of family and friends all of her days.
Visitation will be held at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley on Thursday, April 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
A fellowship of family and friends will follow at the Modale United Methodist Church.
