Phyllis Remington

Phyllis Jean (Kersten) Remington age 87, of Magnolia, Iowa passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Rose Visita Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa. She was born on December 4, 1929 in Magnolia, Iowa. She was one of two children by Amos John and Bertha (Mether) Kersten. Growing up she proved quite often that girls could do anything boys could do. Like the time she was the first in the group to swing in the barn from one hay pile to the next. In high school, she excelled in athletics with basketball being her favorite. After college, she began teaching at Magnolia High School and was a chaperone for the girl’s basketball team. This is where she met Delbert “Gale” Remington and they married on December 23, 1950. While together, until Gale’s passing in 1991, Gale and Phyllis raised their three children in Mondamin, IA; established the Remington Boat Launch; supported local community events and danced as often as they could. Phyllis substitute taught in the West Harrison School District while raising the children and then went on to work for the state of Iowa as a Social Service Worker. In 1996, on Phyllis’ birthday, she reconnected with a former sweetheart, Walter Verne Graham. During their time together, they enjoyed traveling the world, cheering on their favorite sports teams, hosting dance lessons in their basement, and spending time with family and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Amos and Bertha; husband Delbert “Gale” Remington and Walter Verne Graham.
She is survived by her brother, Merle Kersten (Billie), Kansas City, KS; her three children, Cindy Coyle (Gregg), Athens, GA, Bryan Remington, Mondamin, IA and John Remington (Todd), Omaha, NE. Her joy was her six grandchildren, Morgan Coyle Grayson (Brett), Blaire Coyle Hovis (Tommy), and Ryan Coyle (Jennifer); Matt Remington (Jessica) and Wade Remington (Brittany); and Tarah Remington; six great grandchildren to whom she was known as “Grandma Great” and two more on the way. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends.
Memorials should be made to the Logan United Methodist Church (302 East 8th Street, Logan, Iowa 51546).
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

“She Is Gone” by David Harkins

You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
