Robert Harold Kruempel

Robert “Bob” Harold Kruempel was born on May 27, 1946 in Oelwein, Iowa to Harold Herman Kruempel and Jane Ann Scott Kruempel. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 23, 2021.

Robert was the second child of four children. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington, Iowa. Robert graduated from Valley High School of Clermont, Elgin, and Wadena, Iowa in May of 1964, shortly before his eighteenth birthday. He then attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a BA in Religion in 1969. Robert felt the call into the ministry of The American Lutheran Church. He attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. During his third year he interned at American Lutheran Church in De Smet, South Dakota, and at a small congregation, St. John Lutheran Church in Bancroft, South Dakota. On June 16, 1974, he and De Ann Helen Wolkow were married at American Lutheran Church, De Smet, South Dakota. Robert was ordained into the ministry of The American Lutheran Church at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa on June 24, 1974. Robert and De Ann moved to his first call, The Benedict Lutheran Parish consisting of First Lutheran Church, Ruso, North Dakota; Hope Lutheran Church, rural Sawyer, North Dakota; and Concordia Lutheran Church, Benedict, North Dakota, in July 1974. On November 1, 1978, Robert began work at his second parish consisting of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Toeterville, Iowa and Faith Lutheran Church, Mitchell, Iowa. From Toeterville, Iowa, Robert moved his family to his third parish, St. John Lutheran Church of rural Akron, Iowa. Together, Robert and De Ann had 5 daughters; Laura, Mary, Jennie, Heidi, and Amy. The Kruempel family moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa in 1987, where Robert served as pastor at. St. Paul Lutheran Church until January 21, 2009. Robert touched many lives while sharing the ministry of God. He officiated countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals where he shared in the joys and sorrows of many parishioners. Bob will forever be remembered for his dry humor, sarcasm, love of bagpipe music, quick witty responses, and love of his children and 11 grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his children Laura Davis, Mary (Wyatt) Greenwood, Jennie (Kurt) Hertzog, Heidi (Jeff) Dennis, Amy (A.J.) Roden, and 11 grandchildren; Kirsten, Kylie, Jordan, Payton, Lucas, Kaleb, Marcus, Sam, Marisa, Jackson, and Josie, as well as his sisters Carol and Deanna, and brother Richard.

He is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Jane Kruempel and Baby Dennis (July 2013 to Jeff & Heidi).

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 28th from 5-7PM at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa

  Memorial Service: Wednesday, September 29th, 10:30AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 633 Willow Ave., Council Bluffs, Iowa

    Sorry for your loss. We appreciated Bob as our neighbor in miniatry when we lived in Dunlap. He was a good friend.

    So sorry to read about Roberts passing. I enjoyed our bi yearly conversations at the dentist office. He was a really nice man.
