Robert L. Hardy

Robert L. Hardy age 90 of Missouri Valley, Iowa passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Robert Lee Hardy was born on August 18, 1928 to Joe R. Hardy and Emma (Peterson) Hardy in Harrison County, Iowa. He grew up on Joe’s farm three miles northwest of Logan. As an only child on the farm, he enjoyed the outdoors and had a creative bent that led him to build his own Ferris wheel and other inventions. Robert began his education at the Silver Hill country school and graduated from Logan High School in 1946. After graduation, Bob attended college at Iowa State University for a short time and then returned home to begin farming and marry the love of his life, Margaret Niles. Bob met Margaret at the Missouri Valley roller rink, and they got to know each other as they enjoyed one of their favorite pastimes. Bob took a special trip to Ames to be sure that Markie didn’t get away, as she was at Iowa State a year before him.
Bob did not attend church regularly while growing up, but Markie soon brought him to the First Baptist Church in Missouri Valley. There he heard a guest evangelist and came to faith in Christ. Bob and Margaret were married on June 5th, 1949 and soon became members of the First Christian Church in Logan, where Bob served as a deacon. Missing church was a rarity, and it was not unusual to see Bob reading his Bible as he rested before going back out to work.
Bob and Markie lived in the same farmhouse for 63 years and in addition to enjoying farm life together, shared their interest in flower gardens, fruit trees, and even pottery and other arts. Bob always enjoyed fishing, as well as hunting deer, pheasants, and turkey. He had a love for music, and always regretted declining the offer of piano lessons from his aunt as a boy. In his early forties, Bob began to take lessons and played piano and organ for enjoyment to the end of his life.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Margaret and son Robbie.
He is survived by his son Carroll (Kathy) Hardy of rural Des Moines; daughter Susan (Brit) Liljedahl of Missouri Valley; five grandchildren: Amanda Hardy, Nathanael Hardy, Justin (Tobi) Isbell, Daniel (Sara) Hardy, Diane Hardy, and three great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at the Christian Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Immediately following the service, the family would like to invite you to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Christian Church Fellowship Center.
