Steven Arthur Dorland

Steven Arthur Dorland was born November 13,1950, to Art Dorland and Hazel (Hull) Dorland in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Steve attended Underwood Community School. His family moved to Woodbine in 1966 where he graduated in 1968 from Woodbine High School. Steve went to Iowa State majoring in Agricultural Engineering and graduated in 1972. He continued working at the family farm. On June 2nd 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Delores Nielsen. The couple purchased an acreage close to the family farm and began a farrowing/feeder pig operation with Steve’s father. From his youth, Steve was always interested in computers. His sister states that in Jr high he built a computer for his science project. It covered an entire card table and was about 1 foot high. It could add up to about 5. From then on he was always working on computers. He was so excited when he was able to get a kit to build a home computer. In addition to farming, Steve started taking computer science night courses from Iowa Western. He was hired by First National Bank of Omaha as a systems analyst. In 1984, the family moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa. He retired from the bank in 2017. Steve was an Elder in the Community of Christ Church serving as pastor for several years. Steve enjoyed traveling and history. He was also an avid woodworker. He made toys for grandchildren, neighbors and friends. He made wooden fire trucks for the Fire men’s Ball Auction. He also liked to make cabinets and furniture. He built a new garage with a workshop above it. Called the Garage Ma Hall. He created all of the work tables and storage areas for his shop. He was especially proud of his homemade CNC machine. Steve and Delores traveled the country with their custom made tear drop trailer. They traveled the Pacific Coastal Highway, the Eastern Sea board. Watched the whales near Bar Harbor, visited the ancient mounds at Poverty Point, Louisiana, the Grand Canyon, Fort Ticonderoga and other historical sights in the continental USA.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Delores; his children: Michael (Tonya) Dorland of Woodbine, Jennifer Dorland of Woodbine, Mary (Robert) Hansen of Lenexa, Kansas, James (Katelyn) Dorland, of West Des Moines, Carolyn (Josh) Goodsell, of Missouri Valley; Nine grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild and his two sisters, Jane (David) Lesch of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Joyce (Robert) Martin of Guthrie, Oklahoma, and many other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to either the Missouri Valley Community of Christ Church or the Missouri Valley Fire men’s Association.

Hearing of Steve’s passing is hard news to swallow. He was a wonderful co-worker who was always helpful, smart, and patient with those of us were slow to see things the right way. I have many fine memories of working closely with Steve. I send Mike and the other members of Steve’s family my thoughts and prayers.
